About Delmi Alvarez | photojournalist & documentary


Delmi Alvarez is a photojournalist and writer. He is interested in documentary photography of social affairs, environment and human rights. His works have been published in magazines, newspapers and displayed in exhibitions. His professional career as photojournalist start in 1983 in the middle of social worker conflicts covering for media (magazines and newspapers) and documenting Vigo and Galicia country. In 1990 lived in La Habana to work with La Voz de Galicia as contributor photographer and writer. After the Cuba time he wents to Yugoslavia war (1991-93) as correspondent for the same newspaper publishing a small documentary book with texts and pictures of the atrocity and aftermath of the conflict (Reporteiro de guerra en Iugoslavia. Ed. Xerais, Crónica). 

Throughout his career he has been invited as guest lecturer and speaker in different places and countries, universities and schools about the importance of visual story telling, documentary photography and photojournalism. As writer he published several books and one documentary long term project "Galegos na Diáspora, 1989-2009" about the galicians emigrated around the world in all continents. The book with more 500 pages and black&white images had a presentation in the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2009 and in the City University of New York (CUNY) where two books are in the library collection. 

Delmi organized and curated several projects of photography with international photographers and others in cooperation with Ian Berry and Richard Kalvar from Magnum photos agency.
        
In 1989 began a long term project about Camino de Santiago involving from 2006 till 2008 to 13 photographers of Europe creating a documentary of the ancient pilgrim way to Santiago de Compostela with a exhibition running all the world from Copenhague to Japan or Sao Paulo sponsored by galician government.

As photojournalist he is a contributor for Diena newspaper, Getty Images / Global Assignment and Corbis images.

The National Geographic Stock adquire images from his project Himbas in Namibia.

As filmmaker Delmi produced with TVG (Televisión de Galicia) three documentaries broadcasted in 2006, 2009 and 2010 from stories of persons living in the diaspora in Africa, Venezuela and Rusia.

Currently he's in Brussels, Belgium.
