This is the second part of documentary photo-essay project Fortress Europe began in 2003 with the new members of the European Union and its borders. In this second part Greece is the gateway to the thousands of dreams of asians and africans, and Europe builds a wall to them. The journey trough Turkey and Greece is a chronicle of how the greeks are living the moment even with the bad economic situation.
Greeks are deeply an friendly and with a long history in hospitality, and they are lucky with the sun and good weather and the many islands for the tourism, but in the last years another problem is starting: illegal immigration.
Greece is the first country where the immigrants want to arrive and follow toward other EU countries, but the regulation and EU law don't allow the seekers of new life reach other EU countries.
Once they crossed the river Evros with Turkey they are detained in detention camps in a inhuman situation and with total lack of dignity. Hellenic police is doing its best but they are not helped so much from Athens, in this case many policemen don't wish to hear about politicians, many of them are telling.
In Nea Vyssa, a small village in the northern Greece the farmers enjoy drinking frapé and taking a rest before come back to the hard work in the fields. While hundred of immigrants cross by the fields willing to be detained by police and be taken to the detention camps.
Europa is the paradise of broken dreams.
